Peach Basil Bourbon Smash

I, as you probably guessed, am buying all the summer fruit.  And sometimes I don’t like just to eat my fruit but to drink it too.  I mean fruit is good in all forms and a cocktail with fruit in it must be kind of healthy, right???

When Jessica from Moscow Mule Mugs reached out to me after I liked one of her Instagram posts offering to send me some mugs, I knew I had to create that summer cocktail of my dreams.  She started this business after finding there weren’t that many awesome copper mugs on the market.

This is because it’s important copper mugs are lined with nickel so the copper does not leach into the drink.  These shiny mugs are indeed lined with nickel and are good for so much more than Moscow Mules.

I mean, I love a good Moscow Mule, but I am not making them all the time and I don’t want to leave these beauties sitting in the cabinet.  What’s great about Moscow Mule Mugs is that they keep the drink cold and are also easy to hold.  I found that they were sturdy and promoted far less spilling than say a martini glass.

Because they are delicate, they need to be hand washed, but I don’t mind that.  I actually hand wash a fair portion of my dishes, including all knives, pots and pans, and bakeware.  I find the dishwasher is far too harsh and I’d rather be in control of the process from start to finish.

Now let’s talk about this drink.  I knew I wanted to make something with peaches because they are my one true love I’m fairly convinced.  I also knew I wanted to incorporate herbs.  Herbs seem so scary to so many people when they are a great way to add a unique and refreshing flavor to drinks and desserts, not just savory dishes.

It felt like a cop out to use vodka since that’s the base for a traditional Moscow Mule, so I went with bourbon.  The result is this Peach Basil Bourbon Smash and I promise you will love it.  The sweetness from the peaches and fresh orange juice plays so well with the freshness of the basil and then that punch from the bourbon.  It’s light, refreshing, and so perfect for summer.

Go check out Moscow Mule Mugs!  They are also on social media as @moscowmuled and #moscowmuled.  Cheers to summer!

Peach Basil Bourbon Smash

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 10 minutes

Yield: 4 drinks

Ingredients

3 large peaches
½ cup basil leaves
½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice
¼ cup St. Germain
2/3 cup bourbon
1 cup sparkling water, chilled (I used Lime Bubly and it was fab!)

Instructions

  1. Cut two of the peaches into large chunks and place in a medium bowl. Cut the other peach into wedges and set aside. Set aside some of the prettiest basil leaves and place the rest in the bowl. Pour the orange juice, St. Germain, and bourbon into the bowl.
  2. Using a spoon or fork or if you have a muddler, smash the mixture in the bowl until the basil is fragrant and the peaches are in small peaches and releasing their juice. Spoon into glasses or mugs and top with sparkling water. Garnish with peach wedges and reserved basil. Serve immediately.
